After completing undergraduate studies at Texas Tech University in Lubbock Texas, medical school at UT Southwestern medical school in Dallas, and rotating internship in Newport News, Virginia, Dr. Morehead served for 2 assignments as a flight medical officer in the USAF. He then underwent 2 years of training as a categorical general surgery resident, followed by otolaryngology residency at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in San Antonio. He served as a Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery fellow at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. He then was appointed as Chief of Facial Plastic Surgery at Wilford Hall Medical Center. During this period, he was appointed Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services School of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland.
