Dr. Feder works on high-profile cases: a class action lawsuit with the East Los Angeles Regional Center, securing evidence-based care for autistic individuals; one of California’s first Laura’s Law cases, advocating for external oversight in psychiatric care; one of the state’s first Mental Health Diversion cases, ensuring treatment over incarceration for felony offenses; he won San Diego County’s first long-term Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) case for life-threatening illness; and a successful attempted murder defense in New Jersey for an individual with developmental disabilities. Dr. Feder has 100’s of publications. Since 2017, he has been Editor-in-Chief at the Carlat Child Psychiatry Report, a leading publication shaping psychiatric care. Dr. Feder is the Executive Medical Director of Positive Development, providing in-home and community services for autistic children nationwide. In his clinical practice, half of his patients have developmental challenges, while the other half face complex neuropsychiatric issues, many with significant trauma histories. Dr. Feder served on the review board for Child Maltreatment and on the U.S. Navy Headquarters Child Sexual Abuse Team in Washington, D.C., analyzing cases worldwide. Board-certified in General Psychiatry and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, he has served on faculty at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, the University of California at San Diego School of Medicine, and Fielding Graduate University. Dr. Feder conducts research on autism care for all ages. His landmark publications include the 1999 Practice Parameters for Autism Assessment and Treatment, published by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and the 2024 paper defining Developmental Relationship-Based Approaches to Care. His research includes trauma-impacted families in the U.S., Northern Ireland, and the Middle East, helping parents and caregivers adopt responsive, less harsh interactions with children.
